Tredegar Junior Band - 1974

Tredegar Junior Band won the Butlins National Youth Championship of Great Britain for the first time in 1974 – a feat they repeated the following year.

Conducted by Tudor Williams, the principal cornet of the senior band, the first victory was an immense achievement as they played against a number of much larger combined schools and Area bands from around the country.

This image, taken on the band's return to Tredegar, shows 9 year old Iwan Fox (the youngest player) perched on the shoulders of  Town Band Society Band Chairman Reg Childs, with the winner’s trophy above his head.

The man to the left of the picture is the town’s MP, Michael Foot, an ardent supporter who met the band as they returned home following the contest.

The trophy is still retained by the Butlins organisation, although it is now used as the prize presented to the 'Most Entertaining Band' in the Championship Section of the Butlins Mineworkers Brass Band Championship held annually in Skegness.
