National result maintains excellent Albert Hall returns

The band’s result at the Royal Albert Hall on the weekend has maintained a fine record of achievement at the contest since making its debut at the event in 1964.

Tredegar has in fact filled every top-six spot in the results - with the weekend’s latest second place, the fourth time it has come runner-up.

Four runner-up places

The first was in 1993 under conductor John Hudson, followed 10 years later in 2003 led by Steve Bastable. In 2013 the band was placed second under Ian Porthouse – a feat repeated this year.

Also add in another nine top-six finishes and five times in the top-ten in 31 appearances and you can see why the band is always considered one of the form horses at the contest.

The result this year means that the band is already pre-qualified for the contest in 2018.

Top-six results:

Fourth: 2014
Fifth: 1994, 2000, 2004, 2011, 2015
Sixth: 1977, 1979

Not unluckiest though...

The band is not the unluckiest though - as the famous CWS Manchester Band came runner-up five times in 1953, 1954, 1956, 1957 and 1961 before they finally won the title in 1962.
